In the process of being finalized is the initiative for the town of Badoc and Maui to sign a Sister City Agreement following Maui officials’ visit to Badoc, Ilocos Norte in July 2009.

People from Badoc  have lived in Maui since the advent of the sakadas in 1906. Recent estimates indicate that some 1,000 Badoc-natives live and work in Maui. The sister city agreement is expected to further boost deep cultural bonds as well as assist in establishing a viable economic relationship leveraged on the close ties between the people of Maui and Badoc.

Consul General Cardenas was in Maui for the “Alay sa Kababayan” Consular Outreach Program of the Philippine Consulate, from 13 – 15 November 2009, aimed at bringing regular consular services to Filipinos living in the different islands in the State of Hawaii.
